Think About It
A few days ago my mother told my sister, my aunt and I a story. She was coming back from a wedding with some friends of hers. It was rather a big dressing so they were all especially gaily dressed. On the way home they were quite jolly as the wedding had been a pleasant one and they were all talking loudly and laughing at each others jokes with abandon. My mother stopped shortly to take a breath when out of the corner of her eye she saw a woman looking at them rather sadly. The lady made a slight but frantic gesture with her hand for them to turn back. My mum must have seen the seriousness in her eyes because she immediately told the driver to turn back and take another way home. It turned out that there were armed robbers waiting to lay ambush a few metres ahead. The woman didn't voice her warning because she was afraid to cause a panic. Those living in Lagos will know what the shout 'Armed Robbber' can do in a crowded place and this was a road side market. My mother then compared this incident to life. Every day christians see people on their way to hell. Driving past them drunk with pleasure not knowing that the end is a few metres away and yet we don't say anything. We are standing between them and death and we still look mutely on. Sometimes just a simple gesture or warning could make a difference. After she told this story there was a brief silence in the car as we all thought about it and turned it over in our heads. My aunt broke the silence momentarily by saying thoughtfully 'That's deep'. It is.
